Summer Solstice
We get exactly fifteen hours of daylight today. Sunrise at 5:17 AM and sunset at 8:17 PM today only! It is all down hill from today until December when it is the shortest day of the year. In Finland the sun never actually sets this time of year. I have noticed that on a flight I took to Germany some years back in June, the plane took a polar route. When we left New York around 8:00 PM it was almost dark, but it never got totally dark out that night.
Although the season's temperature is conditional upon the amount of daylight we receive, it it interesting to note the lag effect. The so-called "dog days" of August occur when the amount of daylight is rapidly decreasing. Some of the nastiest cold and snow happens in late February and early March when the days are getting longer.
