Phew! Computer gods are smiling!
Just got finished with my first client of the day. It was a simple migration job to a new XP machine from Windows 98 (not SE). Well, my first problem was multiple versions of AOL. They hosed the TCP-IP stack on the 98 machine. No way could I get that thing to recognize the Ethernet adapter. I even installed my good, ol' trusty 3C905-TX and it wouldn't bind the protocol. I threw my hands in the air and switched to plan B.
I decided to remove the hard disk from the machine and install it as a "slave" in the new Dell. Fine. During the course of that process, one of the surface mounted resistors (or condensor) un-mounted itself. Great! The drive is hosed now.
Since remounting the component was near to impossible, and sending the drive carcass to On-Track was not in their budget, I launched a search for a 4Gig Quantum Fireball. Since Quantum no longer supports the drive, my chances of finding one weren't very good, outside of a long disregarded junk box somewhere.
But, the computer gods were smiling. There, in an abandoned ATX case in an adjacent office, was the Holy Grail! A Quantum Fireball WITH all the comtroller's parts intact! Now I know a controller board "transplant" doesn't always work, but this time it did! Huzzah!
