A Catholic priest has started holding masses for pets in the German city of Cologne.

The first service at the Christ Resurrection church in Cologne attracted more than 150 people and their dogs, cats, rabbits and lizards.

Father Wolfgang Kestermann said although he was a little nervous before the service began he was pleased at how well it went.

"It was the first time I had conducted a mass in which people were not at the centre. Instead I concentrated on blessing their pets and I'm pleased to say they were all very well behaved.

"It's something I will definitely be repeating."

Veterinarian Dr Wilfried Brach-Virnich, a member of the congregation, who came up with the idea said there was no reason why pets should not be blessed and prepared for the afterlife.

"After all, it's got to be every animal lover's wish for a paradise that includes humans and animals," he said.

Gabriele Kruzius, 60, who came to the service with her dog Lilli, said: "I think it's a great idea to be able to have your pets blessed. I'm not a regular church-goer. But I didn't want to pass up this opportunity. "
