Old cars, you just gotta love 'em!

My old car is a 1983 Volkswagen Rabbit GTI whom I refer to as Poot. Now Poot has slowly been begging for attention these past few weeks, as all old cars do constantly. There is always a loose this or a broken that to take care of almost every week.

There are three things that have been gradually growing worse. The windshield (windscreen) washers have been working less and less. Now they are useless and it is still Winter. Then the rear hatch wiper has been failing to work predictably, and there is a dash light out - the one that illuminates the speedometer. All of these problem are related. They are all electrical in natire, and a pain in the ass to get to. It seems that with age, contacts develop corrosion which inhibits the flow of electricity just enough to render these devices useless.
Today was the day I decided to take the steering wheel off, and delve into the matter. Emory board in hand, I am glad to say that I was able to rasp clean all the offending reed contacts. The only part I needed to buy was a 22mm socket and extender to get the steering wheel off. A cheap repair, and time well spent.
