Taking the day off
Since I leave for BOS early tomorrow morning, Kittay and I are being lazy today. I have a few loads of laundry to do and plants to water, otherwise it is nap time.

Leaving for a few days
My cousin Lydia has been staying in Dover, MA for the past month. I am flying up there Saturday morning to be with her for the weekend. We plan stay with some other Brits who have rented a house in Connecticut and are living there for a couple of years. Then she is going back to London to be with her family a few days before they are off for Slovenia. I am going to stay an extra day on the East Coast to catch up with friends and family before returning to the heartland for the rest of the Summer.

Last day of the heat
It was HOT yesterday, 96° in the afternoon. Today it is supposed to go to 92° and then back off. There is cold front somewhere sweeping down fron the northwest which will trigger a few t-storms and cool the place down. Tomorrow the high is supposed to be 76°, a full 20° cooler than yesterday. Kittay is actually loving all this heat. I invite her in and she heads for the food bowl, but doesn't want to stay because it is air conditioned and she gets cold. She would much rather sprawl out on the deck under a chair.

Stuff
I telephoned Lydia's Mum in London to get/give an update. Lydia is in the Boston area now and I am going to meet her next week! So exciting! We will roadtrip to New Jersey to see some of the American branch of the family. My niece, Kelly and family journeyed from Minnesota last week and met up with Lydia. They spent the lion's share of the day seeing Boston's sights.
I won't see Lydia again until sometime in October when I go to England for my annual visit.

TGIF
We are in for some more big-time heat over the weekend. We got an inch of rain last night. You wouldn't believe how green and lush the lawns are today. The storms were intense though. It thundered right over my place once last night, just one bloody loud "BANG!" It was so loud I could feel the place actually shake from the shock wave. It was cool to be "behind" the thunder and to hear the sound of it radiate off into the distance.

Hot, hot, hot!
The heat is unbearable! But I read that it is even more unbearable in places like Arizona. I say, hey, what do you expect, it is Summer! The garden is happy. Kittay is happy (she likes the heat). I have A/C to keep me cool in the day when I am home, and at night so I can sleep. Can't wait to get the next electricity bill!

I guess we are done . . .
. . .with the rain. Final total, exactly three inches in my rain gauge Sunday morning. There is a cold front coming down from the North. It just crossed the Mississipi river and is supposed to be heading this way. If the atmosphere is juicy enough, it will trigger some storms. There were episodes of flash flooding last night. The lawns are green again.

We got our rain!
2½ inches of it today. The problem is that there is very little wind and the WX system is just staying in one place and dumping. I may get an inch, but a mile away it is dry. I suspect every part will get its share by the time a cold front moves everyting out of here on Monday - triggering off more showers in the process!

Yum!
I met a group of friends at the Russia House restaurant on the Northwest side this evening for dinner. They had a very Russian menu which was delicious! We tried a little of everything, from appetizers like satsivi (chicken topped with a thick, cilantro-walnut paste), sprats, and vinaigrette salad. For a main course I had baked salmon with potatoes in a casserole. There was also several varieties of dumplings, including a Ukranian vareniki. I ended my meal with a sour cream cake which was superb.

Dennis: Just drizzle and fizzle
This article just about says it all. There is a big "L" still left over from Dennis spinning around over my head. I have measured about an inch total from the past three days. I forgot to water my crops this morning, so I am hoping we get a shower sometime today.

Dennis the menace
What's left of Dennis is advancing rapidly into Indiana. The original track predicted he would arrive between Tuesday and Wednesday, but I think it will start raining tonight. In our case it is a good thing because we are so dry and still under uninforced water restrictions. There is already a high cloud cover all over the state and the wind has picked up out of the East at a steady 15 kts.

Midsummer garden update
The crops are coming in steadily now. I moved my lavender plant out of the full sun and it seems to be generating new leaves. The same goes for the cucumber. I don't think it likes the full sun because I noticed it was trying its damnedest to hide behind the satellite dish. I am harvesting cherry tomatoes almost daily and using them in my salads. I have only one zucchini after all those orange flowers, but I haven't decided where it will go. Maybe I can persuade someone to make some bread out of it. Continue for the photographs.

I guess the weekend is over
I never bothered with any fireworks, either public or private. Indiana is very lax about controlling fireworks, so you can do a lot of damage locally with impunity. Unfortunately it upsets the animals so I avoid setting off any firecrackers or bottle rockets and such.
I found out last night my next door neighbor's dog has run away. She is an abuse victim, so she is very skittish at best. I took a stroll around the neighborhood at 2:00 AM and actually found a scared dog hiding under a car - not my next door neighbor's dog though.

Trouble in paradise
Finally after a month, the basil plant has started to grow properly with good color and many new leaves. Unfortunately, on one of those new lush leaves, I found this.
I remember my mum using a mixture of baby shampoo and water in a spray bottle to repel insects, so I looked around and found some citrus cleaner and sprayed it on. The bugs didn't like it, so we shall see if it continues to work.
The other problem I noticed was this. Some kind of jungle rot. Don't know what to do about that, or even what it is. Fortunately, there are plenty of unrotted peppers to go around.
Then there is this matter, but that's a whole 'nother issue.
